As one of the City Council's Major Goals set for Fiscal Year 2020 and 2021, the Pier Plaza project will include reconstruction of the entire pier parking lot and pier plaza areas, and restroom building per the development plan approved by City Council. The new design will include many new features, including a full reconfiguration of the parking lot, new concrete pavers and planter areas, new site furnishings and artwork, new showers, bike and surfboard racks, seating areas, shade structures, a new beach access structure, and a play area for children. The City Council awarded a construction contract to Vernon Edwards Constructors on October 1, 2019 and construction began on October 28, 2019.
Work began with demolition of the old restroom and the contractor is currently working on the underground portion of the project. The pier parking lot will be closed during the construction period, which is scheduled to last until May 2020. Additional parking is available in the Addie Street parking lot and the Main Street parking lot, both just a short walk from the pier. Public restrooms are also available at alternate locations, including the Addie Street parking lot, the 200 block of Hinds Avenue and the 700 block of Dolliver Street.
