How Do I Apply for a Permit?

Additions: The first thing to ask yourself is "Does my project change the footprint of the building by adding square footage"? If your answer is "Yes" then you need to speak to a Planner at 805-773-4658. You will need Planning approval prior to submitting a Building application.

Remodels: Fill out an application (you can find in our Documents and Forms under Building Division) and come into the City office with four sets of plans plus two sets of any supporting documents. If you have any questions about fees call our Building Division at 805-773-7040. A plan review fee is required at submittal.

Tenant improvements: It's a good idea to speak to a Planner prior to bringing in a submittal. They can be reached at 805-773-4658. If you are ready to submit to the Building Division, we will require four sets of plans plus two sets of supporting documents and an application. A plan review fee is needed at submittal. New SFR's: These projects will require Planning approval prior to submitting to the Building Division. Once you have your Planning approval, the Building Division requires five sets of plans at submittal, two sets of any supporting documents, a plan review fee and an application. Please contact our Permit Technician for fee estimates at 805-773-7040. All subsequent resubmittal's require three sets of plans.


Do I need to submit in-person or can I mail my plans in? Yes, you can ship your plans to us as long as all supporting documents, application, and checks are included.
