November 8, 2016 General Municipal Election

As part of the consolidated General Election to be held Tuesday, November 8, 2016, the City of Pismo Beach will be holding elections for the following City Council seats:

  • City Council Member (2 seats): 4-year term ending Nov. 2020
  • Mayor (1 seat): 2-year term ending Nov. 2018

Important dates:

  • Deadline for filing Nomination Papers: August 17, 2016, 5:00 p.m. (extended from August 12 due to eligible incumbents not filing)
  • Deadline to register to vote: October 24, 2016 
  • Election Day: November 8, 2016

Potential candidates must be registered to vote in the city of Pismo Beach and will be required to file Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC) forms disclosing economic interests held in the city, as well as information about any campaign contributions received.

For a candidate's name to appear on the November ballot, the candidate must obtain a candidate materials binder from the City Clerk's Office on or after Monday, July 18, 2016 and submit all required nomination paperwork including supporting signatures to the City Clerk's Office. The filing deadline for non-incumbent candidates for Mayor and City Council Member has been extended to Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. The deadline has been extended due to eligible incumbents not filing by August 12 at 5:00 p.m., in accordance with Elections Code Section 10225.

Individuals who wish to run as a write-in candidate may obtain and file the required forms from the Clerk's Office between Monday, September 12, 2016 and Tuesday, October 25, 2016. A write-in candidate's name does not appear on the ballot and must be written in by the voter.

Campaign Signs


Please refer to Pismo Beach Municipal Code Sections 17.111.050 (coastal zone) and 17.36.060 (non-coastal zone), for political campaign sign regulations in the city of Pismo Beach. Please note that signs in City right-of-way or on City property are not allowed and will be subject to immediate removal. Signs otherwise placed in violation of these regulations may be subject to administrative enforcement action. Please contact the Planning Division at (805) 773-4658 for information about sign regulations. 

Signs in State highway right-of-way require a special outdoor advertising permit from Caltrans.

Eligibility and Registration

In order to be eligible to vote in California, an individual must be a United States citizen, a resident of California, and 18 years of age or older on election day. In order to vote in Pismo Beach, an individual must reside in Pismo Beach and register with the San Luis Obispo County Elections Office:

For eligibility to vote in the November 8, 2016 general election, voter registrations must be postmarked or submitted electronically no later than October 24, 2016. Voter registration status may be verified online at or by calling the San Luis Obispo County Elections Office.

Voter registration may be completed online at Paper voter registration applications are available at the Pismo Beach City Clerk's Office, San Luis Obispo County elections office, local libraries, Department of Motor Vehicles offices, and US Post Offices.
